Should government spend money on railways rather than roads?
Government is spending too much money on railways instead of roads. I agree that spending money on railways is essential. However, I also believe that government should pay attention to improving the road.
Spending money on railways is beneficial due to variety of reasons. Firstly, railway is a better mode of transportation compared to bus. As a mode of public transportation, railway is more energy efficient and environmently friendly than bus or car since it can take a huge number of passangers as compared to bus or car. Secondly, railways can improve the livability and convenience of city areas. For example, Indonesia is now creating more stations which are located close to public areas such as residental areas or population centres. Thus, people will reach their destinations easily. Currently, trains are also equipped with complete facilities such as priority seat for disabled, pregnant women and elderly, wifi, catering service and rest room. Train stations have all modern amenities and conveniences such as food court, mosque, clean rest room, etc. Lastly, railways can be a faster mode of transportations for commuters. In Japan, people use Shinkansen (super fast train) as the main mode of transportation to overcome the traffic congestion.
Opposing the view that spending money on railways is vital, I believe that government should pay attention on improving roads as well. Roads need to be maintained since they are still consider as the most popular way to commute in many places. For instance, some places which are not able to accessible by train, still prioritized bus or car due to familiar routes. In addition, public transportation in modern cities should be balanced between various modes. Government should not only pay attention on railways nut also on roads, so people have more options of public transportation.
In conclusion, both railways and roads development are necessary and government should spend money on both of them.
